PHILADELPHIA - Noted for its outstanding effort last season, the Drexel women's squash team was recognized at the 2022 John Wanamaker Athletic Award luncheon on Wednesday afternoon.
The Dragons were one of the finalists for the award for their performance during the 2021-22 season where Drexel was the national runner-up. Included in the season was a dramatic come-from-behind win against No. 3 Trinity in the CSA National Semifinals. The Dragons finished the year 16-5, the most wins ever in program history.
Andre Blake of the Philadelphia Union was the recipient of the 2022 Wanamaker Award. Joining Drexel as finalists were Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies, Cam Atkinson of the Philadelphia Flyers, South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley, Jason Kelce of the Philadelphia Eagles, Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers, Gary Martin of Archbishop Wood track & field, Liz Mancini of La Salle track & field, Maddy Siegrist of Villanova women's basketball, Michelle Joyce of Temple track & field and the Penn men's squash team.
The Wanamaker Athletic Award is presented to the athlete, team or organization which has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel. The award is presented each year by PHL Sports — a division of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau — The Wanamaker Building, The Philadelphia Inquirer and CBS3.
